Encore Award Program
2011 “Teachers of the 21st Century” Awards

Purpose
This awards program, sponsored by the Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley, provides the opportunity for students, parents, community members and business partners to recognize and honor individual teachrs at the Pre-K–12 levels in the St. Vrain Valley School District who exemplify excellence in teaching. By paying tribute to the achievements of teachers who have an extraordinary impact on the achievements of students, the Foundation and the community hopes to pay tribute to the accomplishments of all teachers. Award Winners
One teacher from each St. Vrain Valley School will receive recognition. A master list of eligible schools can be found at the end of these instructions.

Award Nominations Guidelines and Deadline
Nominations are accepted from students, parents, volunteers at the school; as well as from community members or a school’s business partners. Nominators can nominate only one nominee per school. School district staff members are not eligible to nominate teachers at their assigned school. However, staff members are eligible to nominate teachers at other schools.

The nomination form may be found on the Education Foundation’s website www.efsvv.org. Click on the word Nominations on the Home Page and you will be taken directly to the nomination form.

Nominations may be submitted either through the mail or electronically. Nominations must be postmarked or electronically date stamped no later than March 18th. Nominations received after this date are not eligible. Nominations submitted electronically should be sent via email and confirmation of receipt will be sent to the submitter.

Both the nominee and the nominator must sign the nomination form. In the case of an electronic submittal, the nominator needs to indicate that the nomination has been reviewed with the nominee as shown on the form. A sentence confirming this for the review panel is required.

Nomination Criteria
In order to qualify as a nominee, the teacher must currently be a licensed educator in the state of Colorado and employed in a teaching assignment at a St. Vrain Valley School District campus for the current school year. (For charter schools, highly qualified teachers are eligible.) Both full-time and Part-time teachers are eligible.

The Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1985. Our primary mission is to support the Strategic Plan of the St. Vrain Valley School District. As a result, our goal is to supplement the traditional education experience in ways that maximize the effectiveness of teachers and result in enhanced student achievement in an increasingly complex and competitive worldwide environment. We have the opportunity to positively impact over 25,000 students and 1,500 teachers annually.

We strongly support: the full educational spectrum, from students who are struggling academically to those who excel; the development of strong reading, writing and math skills, as well as expanded opportunities in science and technology; and programs that are integrated into the regular classroom curriculum or are direct extensions of such activities.

Nominators should consider the following characteristics:

A “Teacher of the 21st Century” is an educator who . . .

Shows a passion for their field of teaching
Demonstrates knowledge of and enthusiasm for the subject matter
Models to students a behavior of under-standing and respect fo others strengths and weaknesses
Values active learning and works to enhance students own motivation and capacity to learn
Makes the subject interesting and relevant to the students by showing how it applies to their lives

Establishes high but not unreachable standards and supports students in reaching those goals
Demonstrates flexibility, responsiveness and innovation in teaching strategies that keep student learning fresh
Embraces the use of current technology in the classroom
Continues to learn and develop new skills necessary to be a teacher of the 21st century

Nominations should address the following two questions:

A) Considering the characteristics mentioned above, tell us how your nominee demonstrates that they are a Teacher of the 21st Century?

B) From your personal knowledge and observation, how does the nominee communicate or work with others? Consider communication within the school, with parents and guardians, or with the community. Additionally, think about these factors: Is the nominee seen as approachable? Is the nominee seen as a resource for information and guidance? Does the nominee show a sincere interest to work in partnership for the success of each student?

Nominators are encouraged to discuss these questions with the nominee. Responses should be no longer than one page per question.

Your nomination will be complete in 4 EASY STEPS:

Write a paragraph or two addressing Question A.
Write a paragraph or two addressing Question B.
Submit your completed nomination no later than March 18th.
